In 1991 I was at Schumacher College in Dartington, Devon, attending a course given by James Lovelock on his Gaia theory. One of the other lecturers was Kathleen Raine and she gave me a copy of her book Golgonooza, City of Imagination: Last Studies in William Blake and she wrote something in it about a golden thread, I think referring to the theme in William Blake's oeuvre, ... That was the year David Byrne released his album The Forest. Later the same year I met Herbert Girardet and talked with him a little about this idea of the origin of the material world being thought itself.
“I give you the end of a golden string, Only wind it into a ball, It will lead you in at Heaven's gate. Built in Jerusalem's wall.” ― William Blake.
