Sci-Fi Short - Love is Just A Death Away

Bára Anna Stejskalová is a director, artist, animator and screenwriter of animated films specializing in puppet animation. She began her studies at the University of the Arts in Bournemouth, from where she transferred to the FAMU in Prague. In 2018 she was on a scenographic internship at the IADT in Dublin. Her Bachelor's film Fishermen (2017) was nominated for a BAFTA Shortlist. She is a co-author of the HEARDT project, which was awarded an official grant from the Burning Man Festival in the USA. Her graduate film We Are Closer to Death (2020) now travels to world festivals. She is currently collaborating as an artist on the VR project of Ondřej Moravec Tmání.

A short puppet film about the manipulation and retention of one's self in today's technological age, told through the story of a fisherman who one day catches skeletons from a frozen lake. He runs away from him and hides in the dark, where he seeks solace in cheap entertainment. However, reality scratches the window and the fisherman's hiding place quickly becomes a nightmare. Manipulation, humanity, puppetry - these are the main themes of the film.

The idea for the film Fishermen came to me about a year ago. I dealt with the possibilities and expression of puppet animation and its connection to the real world and its current problems. We live in a time when we voluntarily surrender our identities to the invisible. Much of our Self lives somewhere in iCloud above us, where there is no room for anything really real. As this topic is difficult to process in a film without words, I have adapted the artistic style of the narrative so that even the materials used in the film serve meaning. Natural materials fight plastic. Modern devices are literally eaten by handcrafted furniture and in the middle of everything stands our hero - a fisherman.

I also just took this photo of Rafael Gonzales, born here in Tecate, B.C., who told me about a spring near here called Agua Fría , half way from Tecate to Loma Tova , where, a few decades ago, people used to go to have barbecues and stuff, but now he thinks it may be private land.
