Another Excellent Talk on HoTT by Steve Awodey

Image
First watch this talk by Andrej Bauer on Type Universes If you're not afraid of going insane, read Per Martin-Löf's On The Meanings of the Logical Constants and the Justifications of the Logical Laws . (1983). See also Wikipedia's Intuitionistic type theory - Martin-Löf type theories . If that does drive you nuts, then you have nothing to lose so you can just go ahead and read Girard et al 's Proofs and Types . Here's Steve's talk: At 12:00 he mentions that the idea of infinity groupoids came from topology and that they turned up in MLTT as identity types, but they represent the abstract stucture of a space, if you look at its paths and path between paths and so on, ad infinitum . At 15:42 on the different picture of the Universe of all types as points on a two-dimensional plane with the homotopy type on one axis and the cardinality on the other: once you take into account the homotopy types you are able to reason effectively about the Universes. There is an...

Dark Matter

This post has a background track: Subscribe to The Psychadelic Muse . See Newton's Shell Theorem , with a nice proof: https://www.math.ksu.edu/~dbski/writings/shell.pdf . So that expectation of the rotation curve is based on the assumption that Galaxies are spherically symmetric mass distributions. They clearly aren't, but how much does that deviation from spherical symmetry affect the curve? Surely that is the interesting bit. When you are dealing with statistical surveys like this, then it seems quite possible that certain features of the way you choose samples could produce correlations in the results which coincide with the dynamics of the underlying physical model. But the maths of relative entropy measures is relatively recent.  Subcribe to Hausdorff Center for Mathematics . Subscribe to Sabine Hossenfelder . Angela also likes to play God: See The Drake Equation : The Drake equation is a probabilistic argument used to estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy. The equation was formulated in 1961 by Frank Drake, not for purposes of quantifying the number of civilizations, but as a way to stimulate scientific dialogue at the first scientific meeting on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). The equation summarizes the main concepts which scientists must contemplate when considering the question of other radio-communicative life. It is more properly thought of as an approximation than as a serious attempt to determine a precise number.  There's some sort of conspiracy going ...

Toby on The Taylor Swift Exam Questions Everyone's Talking About

Image
Well, I guess I am talking about them now too, but I only heard about them five minutes ago!! Toby's meditation videos are really great.  If you sign up to her Patreon she might send you stickers too! See https://www.patreon.com/Tibees . Subscribe to Tibees . It's a really beautiful song. The album was Produced with Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner: https://taylor.lnk.to/TTPD-theanthology Cassandra : Subscribe to Taylor Swift . Toby's meditation on minds like waves on strings is really interesting. Today I was thinking about these videos I found which were what I studied when I did the The Open University's course on Quantum Mechanics . They're really good. I was thinking about how wave-particle duality showed up in physics just when we started investigating the physics of the actual experimental apparatus we were using to do that investigation. Is it such a surprise that shit suddenly got weird? I suppose no more weird than when we started formalising mathematic...

Emily Riehl Doing Stratospheric Category Theory

Image
Oh God, I think I'm falling in love again, ... See Emily Riehl on Univalent Foundations . She says there's a joke that goes "In Category Theory you have to give examples of your examples, ..." At 12:29 she gives an example of an extension type: Check the timestamps!   And then she says "And that's the rest of the proof but nobody cares about that." See Yoneda for ∞-categories and https://rzk-lang.github.io/rzk . Here is her lecture on fomalising 'post-rigorous mathematics':   Here's a proof in infinity-categories:  ... and another, of the same theorem  ... and another Here's Joseph Urban talking about auto-formalisation: McCarthy, 1962! Poor guy, he was just doing some sort of weird dance in front of an alien from another dimension! Huygens Optics - Photon Bunching / Hanbury Brown & Twiss effect

Image
This is a really beautiful presentation of a real experiment: Subscribe to Huygens Optics . Here are some screenshots of his slides, not in the right order though, so watch the video! See also this recent paper for some idea of the kinds of thing astros are doing with this: A proposal for measuring photon temporal coherence in continuum radiation by Richard Fong: https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.6662 : A technique complementary to those for spectral lines is proposed for the observation of continuum radiation. As, quantum mechanically, the radiation is a mixture of pure states, it should be possible to measure the temporal coherence of the states as a function of energy. We propose here experiments with just this possibility, showing the empirical grounds on which it is based. A simple means of measuring temporal coherence is with the extent of the interference pattern produced in a Young's double-slit experiment. Thus, we propose the use of such an experiment, but with a screen of ene...
