The Functional Craft of Programming on Being Intelligent About Stuff
My comment:
There is a lot you can do if you change the problem! Take social media platforms for example. You don't need to have some fixed notion of simultaneity in the sense of a total order that your platform preserves on message timestamps. If you model time as a partial order then you can have distributed systems which update asynchronously according connectivity and available bandwidth. If you are smart enough to be able to change your business models then you can produce adaptive distributed booking systems on a similar basis. Imagine an airline booking system that only scheduled flights and routes once it had enough committed bookings, and whose prices adapted according to the booking status and what people were prepared to pay. If we were really smart we would be able to manage entire global supply chains like this, right down to scheduling where to build railway lines and roads. Maybe the Chinese will help us do this?
