The Einstein-Szilard Refrigerator was patented by Albert Einstein and his former student Leo Szilard who were moved by a story of a family in Berlin dying because their refrigerator leaked toxic gases. They later become better known for their letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt encouraging the development of nuclear weapons by the United States.
