Gombrich's book explains a lot about the way David thinks of cinema as a language. It's not a static thing and that explains David's cult following in cinema, at least partly. The language is something he has developed over decades and people who "get David Lynch" are those who have developed an interpretational framework in which they understand his films. I haven't, because I've never seen any David Lynch film in its entirety. like Imre Lakatos, Ernst Gombrich was influenced quite a lot by Karl Popper, apparently. You are very well-read, Linda!
