This is amazing! At first I thought "so there is a selection pressure favouring a species' adaptive capacity?" and I was about to comment that this is not favoring certain mutations but favouring mutations in certain proteins, ... when these proteins are not essential, such as those involved in metabolism or transcription or something, ... Then you add that the mutation rate in those genes seems to be environmentally determined, at least partially. So it is epigenetic? It's interesting to note that one of those regions is near Mecca. Richard Dawkins ought to be thinking about this, ...
