I've just been talking to Isabel, to whom I gave a copy of Edward Whymper's Travels amongst the great Andes of the equator. Just before I left England Nik Thomas lent me a copy of Fergus Fleming's Killing Dragons which was a sort of hit-piece on Whymper written by a Telegraph journalist. I just hated that book. Why someone who clearly had no experience of, or love for, mountaineering would spend time writing a book like that was beyond me.
