Arshad Sharif on Corruption of Pakistani PM Shahbaz Sharif

This is an interview, parts of which were used in Independent POV: Behind Closed Doors.

Arshad Sharif was shot and killed in Kenya in October 2022. See Killing of Pakistani journalist Sharif in Kenya ‘planned’: Report:

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced an investigation and promised the government’s findings would be shared with the public. The military and Pakistani journalists also demanded a probe, as did Sharif’s widow, Javeria Siddique, and other family members.

The 49-year-old journalist was living in exile after he fled the country in August to avoid arrest in the wake of multiple cases, including sedition charges, slapped against him for making comments on his show deemed offensive to the military.

Meanwhile, Islamabad police have charged two Pakistani businessmen living in Kenya, who had hosted Sharif in the African country, with involvement in his killing.

In December 2022, Pakistan’s Supreme Court took notice of the case and ordered a government investigation into Sharif’s death. In a December report, a Pakistan government fact-finding team (FFT) found that the Kenyan police portrayal of the killing as a case of mistaken identity was “full of contradictions” and that the involvement of “characters in Kenya, Dubai, and Pakistan in this assassination cannot be ruled out.” The team also noted that a Pakistan post-mortem report had documented numerous injuries on Sharif’s body, including four missing fingernails, hand wounds, and a broken rib, but that the investigation had found “no concrete evidence” to establish that Sharif was tortured before his death.
