Why does the cat have to die if the particle decays? It's so that in the event the particle does decay, there is no cat to observe it, because the cat is dead! And if the cat is alive? Well, that just means the particle hasn't decayed yet!

Speaking of physics, I'm now at 1h 22m in Angela's video Angela Collier - The Doit on Richard Feynman but I had to stop again, ... I got to the bar fight in upstate NY though, and that's a really great story. It sounds completely believable to me!
