It's an interesting thing to think about. Alan Kay and Dan Ingalls did some work recovering the Smalltalk-78 execution environment and learned some things about software design that can mitigate some of these problems. See Reviving Smalltalk-78.

Curiously, in the last decade, the number of C compilers that have been written has increased quite phenomenally. I am not sure that the skill of C programmers in writing portable code has kept pace though, ... That's the hard part that they don't teach you at college.
