Twenty years later Mads Tofte and Lars Thorup wrote some interesting things about object oriented polymorphic abstract types in Standard ML: see Object-Oriented Programming and Standard ML. You used to be able to download the text of that paper but it's no longer available.
The reason this is interesting is that there is something to be learned about implementing communications protocols.
