Gigi Young on "Alice in Wonderland"
The story itself is full of darkness. I spent a couple of days once trying to make sense of the chapter called "The Duchess' Kitchen" To me it seemed to be about war. I think that he joined one of these secret societies and wrote books so that he could reveal their secrets from beyond the grave if the right sort of person showed up and read them. In this self-portrait, which is one of the few surviving photographs of his that he didn't destroy himself, he has the little finger of his right hand curled up. I think that is some kind of freemason's sign.
See The Real Lions Gate Portal.
After Lewis Carroll published his Alice's Adventures Under Ground, there was a plethora of similar stories. He mentions this in the forward to Sylvie and Bruno, I think (see Sylvie's Garden), or possibly it was in The Life and Letters of Lewis Carroll that I read it. This is well worth reading to get an idea of the breadth of his thought. It is still in print. See also William Shakespeare Cancelled.
