The Apple Falls Up

Yesterday I was wondering whether James Lovelock remembers me. At Schumacher College, he was talking about Karl Popper's idea that a theory was only scientific if it could be falsified. I asked him what would be an observation that falsified Newton's theory of gravitation. He said "Well, the apple falls up, I suppose" and lots of people laughed. I didn't think that was a very good example of falsification, but because people had laughed I didn't say any more. I felt a bit stupid!
