US Customs and Border Patrol and ICE Taking DNA Samples from Migrants

Image
They did this to me. After three or four days locked in a solitary cell, they woke me up in the middle of the night and a guy said "open your mouth" I thought he wanted to see my decaying teeth but he took a swab and just shut the door and walked away. So if anybody needs to know my DNA then just ask the FBI! This was in September 2022 and I voluntarily entered the asylum process, I did not attempt to enter the US illegally.  Subscribe to Al Jazeera English .  I thought at the time that it was probably just my friend Bob Müller pissing on the Statue of Liberty. Level1 Techs - The Cost of Not Knowing How to Write Decent Software

Image
This is just horrifying! Subscribe to Level1 Techs . This is what Modular are trying to manage, but I think they're barking up totally the wrong tree. They're building software infrastructure for AI which people need to manage the complexity of software development, and in the process they're making software development even more complex. That's just thermal runaway. 1:27:35 Ben Seidel's question about the boundary between parsing and lexical analysis is a good one. He's asking about this in a very general context, which is that of any language defined by a context-free grammar. The 2006 Nedap Voting Machine Fiasco

Image
This was a voting machine planned to be used in the 2006 elections in the Netherlands. It used a four-line 40 character LCD display driven by the Hitachi HD44780 controller . The problem was the manufacturer could not source enough display controllers with the European character set in ROM, so they used the user-defined characters in CGRAM to display the text. Because the software displayed the same string repeatedly in a loop, and repeatedly reprogrammed the CGRAM each time it displayed the character (which was unnecessary, because the CGRAM is persistent provided the power supply to the driver is is maintained) the extra delay in programming the one accented character, the e-grave appearing in "Christen Democratisch Appèl", changed the AM audio frequency emitted by the display and enabled someone with an AM radio within a few meters (up to 25 in some cases) of the voting booth to know when a vote for the CDA had been cast. Angela Collier Building A Radio Telescope in Her Back Yard

Image
She says this is a 100K subscribers celebration, but maybe she means 300K? It's about a kit that NASA are sending people as part of the Radio JOVE project . Apparently when Jupiter's magnetosphere interacts with solar storms it resonates somehow and emits a radio signal called The Jovian Decametric Radio Emission : "After the accidental discovery of radio bursts from Jupiter, scientists sought to understand what caused this radio emission. They started with careful observations, recording the times they heard Jupiter and how intense Jupiter's decametric radio bursts were. (The word decametric means tens of meters since the wavelength of the radio bursts are in the tens of meters). After collecting these radio data they compared it with other information they had about Jupiter. They began to match the Jupiter radio bursts with the rotation of the planet." So what they are observing are the changes in intensity of this radio emission on a timescale scale of about 1...

Stig Shift #78 (Aircraft Maintenance Adventures)

Image
... mainly Boeing 787s. At  14:55 he explains the whole fuel switch system in great detail. It does not involve any software control at all: it's a direct electrical connection to a relay which controls power to an electro-mechanical valve that controls the fuel supply to the engines, so it's completely independent from the FADEC system in the engine. I also saw another description on the Mover and Gonky show, see below, of the actual microswitch which is multi-pole, so a separate connection goes to the flight data recorder. It does seem like sabotage would be very difficult to do like this. Their Raspberry Pi Connect : Raspberry Pi Connect gives you free, simple, out-of-the-box access to your Raspberry Pi from anywhere in the world. It is a secure remote access solution for Raspberry Pi OS, allowing you to connect to your Raspberry Pi desktop and command line directly from any browser.   This is a way to allow you to make a peer-to-peer connection between two machines when both peers agree to do so by connecting to the same central server, without either peer having a well-known name or having to listen for incoming connections. Only when both peers have a simultaneous connection to the same central server can they establish a direct connection.  I haven't tried it, because for some reason I don't understand, it requires you to enable auto-login on your machine for it to work. But why? When you couple this with ...

Using File Compression to Measure Similarity

Image
Buck Shlegeris is CEO of Redwood Research . See Ming Li, Xin Chen, Xin Li, Bin Ma, and Paul M. B. Vitányi The Similarity Metric .  A new class of distances appropriate for measuring similarity relations between sequences, say one type of similarity per distance, is studied. We propose a new “normalized information distance,” based on the noncomputable notion of Kolmogorov complexity, and show that it is in this class and it minorizes every computable distance in the class (that is, it is universal in that it discovers all computable similarities). We demonstrate that it is a metric and call it the similarity metric  See also   Rudi L Cilibrasi and Paul M B Vitányi Fast Phylogeny of SARS-CoV-2 by Compression . This is some classy film-making going on (especially the deja vu at 2:42 ). It was filmed 14 Sept 2020, after I left for La Paz. See  Yet Another Blog  (15 Sept 2020).  The skate park is Parque Urbano Ollantay , not too far from the place where I got bitten by a dog  in April 2011. Nearby there is a long avenue called 27 de mayo  which is lined with busts of Bolivia's military heroes through history, though many of them have been partly destroyed and many are missing. It was not lit at night, and there were dogs and homeless encampments in the bushes. It does, perhaps, explain why the flight recorder was located 1,000 feet away, because the wreckage was spread over a distance of 1,000 feet: "The wreckage, from the first impact point till the last identified aircraft item, was distributed in [sic] an area of approx. 1000 ft x 400 ft".
