He's just ad-libbing. This is an unprepared talk, I think. I suspect he had an insight into Cabalist practice that those who spoke only Hebrew fluently may have missed. He spoke only French (for political reasons) and Greek (to be able to get his groceries in, ... that may have been enough to appreciate the value of structured ambiguity, ... Note I am just speculating wildly from my own experience of learning Spanish and being a native English speaker and knowing a bit of Greek and French, for the same reasons as Leonard Cohen gives. I also just took this photo of Rafael Gonzales, born here in Tecate, B.C., who told me about a spring near here called Agua Fría , half way from Tecate to Loma Tova , where, a few decades ago, people used to go to have barbecues and stuff, but now he thinks it may be private land.
