Part II:  My comment : When I was a kid I designed an 8-bit computer whose state transitions were a function of its global operation. It was very simple. All I did was use memory-mapped I/O registers to control address-decoding logic. At the simplest level this was just a memory management unit where logical addresses mapped to physical memory addresses via whatever the address-decoding logic determined. But then I realised that the memory addresses at which the address-decoding logic registers appeared could themselves be controlled by the address-decoding logic. I didn't build it because the immediately obvious problem was how you could reliably program it. If there were any error in writing the registers then the machine state would have departed from the small subset of states which had deterministic behaviour. But in principle systems like this would have the property that Andrés talks about: their microstate is determined in part by their macrostate. I had never thought of ...

I had a lot of buttons pushed listening to this. My comment : The theme is money. But money is just a kind of knowledge: knowledge about the perceived value of things. It's a sign of total global insanity that peoples' lives are ruined and others are killed just because of different ways value is perceived. The root cause is our inability to adequately communicate our perceived values to one another. That should be the core rôle of the United Nations, but it isn't doing that. Instead it just provides platforms that can be captured in one way or another by spontaneous groupings of special interests. My comment : 5:29 That's a company called VFS Global. They sub-contract visa administration for a large number of countries. Not only visas, they also handle, for example, the passport renewal process for South Africans resident outside the country. Their IT skills are apalling. Their systems barely work at all, and they aren't able to provide adequate manual backup. It's almost certainly incompetence rather than deliberate, but they are wide open to abuse by others because their systems are so insecure. But for these governments who cannot even maintain an honorary consulate in most other countries they are the only option. It is the IT industry that is to blame for this, and the Universities. This is really interesting.  It seems that the electric field in a cloud is insufficient to cause a spark.
