Angela Collier Building A Radio Telescope in Her Back Yard
She says this is a 100K subscribers celebration, but maybe she means 300K? It's about a kit that NASA are sending people as part of the Radio JOVE project. Apparently when Jupiter's magnetosphere interacts with solar storms it resonates somehow and emits a radio signal called The Jovian Decametric Radio Emission: "After the accidental discovery of radio bursts from Jupiter, scientists sought to understand what caused this radio emission. They started with careful observations, recording the times they heard Jupiter and how intense Jupiter's decametric radio bursts were. (The word decametric means tens of meters since the wavelength of the radio bursts are in the tens of meters). After collecting these radio data they compared it with other information they had about Jupiter. They began to match the Jupiter radio bursts with the rotation of the planet." So what they are observing are the changes in intensity of this radio emission on a timescale scale of about 10 hours, and presumably if there are thousands of these antennae all around the earth then they will be able to do some data processing and combine them into some sort of composite image?
She's threatening to read Carl Sagan's book Contact, ...
