More seriously, I think we need a more fundamental level of integration of scientific and technological development. This idea of thinking a bit more carefully about the thermodynamics of the system is a good start, but how about studying the National Grid (in the US and the UK!) a bit more holistically? Then I would have fewer murders to investigate, and Sabine would have fewer electrical cables to investigate, ... Just a thought. See Brian Josephson on Organised Complexity and Thermodynamics. It might just turn out that if we have enough trees in our cities then we can reduce the CO2 to a comfortable level whilst letting the global average climb (see Roderick Dewar's 2003 paper Information theory explanation of the fluctuation theorem, maximum entropy production and self-organized criticality in non-equilibrium stationary states) and cooking our forest canopies.
